Lions Take Down Pfeiffer in First Home Win of the Season

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team took down USA South foe Pfeiffer by a score of 16-8. The Lions battled with the Falcons in the first half for control of the game before pulling away at the beginning of the fourth period.

Freshman Savannah Limehouse and Sophomore Laura Crone got the scoring started midway through the first period as Piedmont took an early 2-0 lead. The Falcons and Lions traded goals for the remainder of the period with Piedmont clinging to a one-goal lead headed into the second.

Pfeiffer scored directly after the start of the new period, tying the game at 4-4. Junior Merryn Bumpass was the next to strike for Piedmont, followed right behind by sophomore Lovette Choloh to once again push the lead to two. The Falcons refused to fall further behind, battling hard to stay in the fight as the teams continued to pour in the goals. A last-minute goal from the visitors with just 00:22 in the period cut the lead to 8-6 heading into the half.
Out of the break, the Piedmont defense locked down the Pfeiffer offense, allowing just one goal in the third period. Meanwhile, the Lions offense continued to go to work, with a pair of goals from junior Ava Trankina and a goal from sophomore Carson Bezold giving them an 11-7 lead.

Now on a 3-1 run since the half time break, Bumpass collected her third goal of the contest and senior Maggi Spratlin scored her second to give their team a 13-7 lead with 10:53 to play in the fourth. Standing strong, the defense once again allowed just one goal in the fourth period as Piedmont pulled away for the 16-8 win.

Up next, Piedmont heads back out on the road to take on N.C. Wesleyan in USA South action on Friday, March 29.

TURNING POINT:
-- Piedmont went on a three-goal run, scoring the final goal of the third period and the first two of the fourth period.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- Merryn Bumpass led Piedmont with 4 goals and 6 ground balls.
-- Ava Trankina and Savannah Limehouse both had hat tricks.
-- Trankina posted a career-high 6 assists and a career-high 9 points.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-- Piedmont dominated the draw control battle 17-11.
-- The Lions caused 18 turnovers to just 7 from Pfeiffer.
--Piedmont out shot the Falcons 43-19.
