Strong Start Not Enough as Lions Fall Late to Centre

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team fell 15-13 to the Colonels of Centre in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Lions started strong and held a 9-2 lead at one point in the contest.

It was a five-goal onslaught for the Lions to open the action. Savannah Limehouse, Ava Trankina and Merryn Bumpass all scored within the first three minutes of the contest. As the Piedmont defense continued to hold the Colonels scoreless, Limehouse and Bumpass found the back of the net again, making it 5-0.

Centre looked to come to life at the start of the second, scoring two goals in the first minute. The Lions responded with a 4-0 run of their own to give themselves their biggest lead of the game at 9-2. The Colonels scored three times before the period closed, trailing 9-5 into the break.

Out of half, the Centre run continued as they added two goals to slice the lead to two. The teams traded blows in the third with the Lions holding a narrow 12-9 lead going into the final period.

Limehouse opened the scoring in the fourth, putting in her third of the game. However, the Centre offense finally clicked, going on a tear in the last ten minutes of play. Six unanswered goals hoisted the Colonels into a 15-13 lead over the Lions as Piedmont remained unable to break the rally and dropped the contest. 

Up next, the Lions host Pfeiffer at home in USA South action on Saturday, March 23.

-- The Colonels went on a 6-0 run to close out the contest and finished with a 15-13 win.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- Savannah Limehouse and Merryn Bumpass both scored 4 goals in the contest.
-- Ava Trankina and Savannah Limehouse both posted 5 point games.
-- Ava Trankina and Lovette Choloh both had 7 draw controls.
