SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team dropped a close matchup at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon by a score of 17-13. Junior Ava Trankina posted a team leading five goals in the contest but the Lions were unable to close the gap.

The first period of action got off to a hot start with the Tigers scoring in the first minute. Trankina was able to level the contest just over a minute later but Sewanee continued to press the issue. Exploding for a 5-1 run, the Sewanee offense looked to pull away early. Junior Merryn Bumpass scored with just second remaining in the first as the Lions trailed 6-3 after one.

Two quick goals from the Tigers pushed the lead to five as the two team began to trade blows. Senior Maggi Spratlin, junior Jadyn Gleason and Trankina all scored in the period but Piedmont still went to the halftime break down 10-5.

Despite Trankina opening the scoring in the second half, Sewanee's offense continued to try to bury the Lions, scoring four goals over the next four minutes. Now down by eight, Piedmont attempted to answer with goals from junior Lovette Choloh and Trankina but once again the Tigers pulled away.

In the fourth, Piedmont remained unable to close the separation and the contest finished 17-13 in favor of the home squad.

Up next, Piedmont is set to take a long break before facing Lynchburg at home on March 11. The Lions were originally scheduled to play Drew University on March 5 but the contest has since been canceled.
