Third Quarter Rally Not Enough as Lions Fall to Berry 16-14

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 14, Berry 16
Records: Piedmont, 1-2; Berry 4-0

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team dropped a tight contest to the Vikings of Berry late Wednesday night. Piedmont fell behind early before using the halftime break to reset and attempt a comeback.

It was all Vikings early, jumping out to a massive lead. Four different goal scorers combined for six first quarter goals while holding the Lions scoreless.

Berry added a seventh goal to open the second before CCS Freshman of the Week Savannah Limehouse finally got Piedmont on the board. A pair of goals from junior Merryn Bumpass pulled the Lions within five but a 4-0 run to end the quarter saw Berry take a 12-3 lead into the break.

After halftime, the Piedmont offense came to life. Senior Maggi Spratlin kicked things off with the opening goal before junior Ava Trankina, sophomore Lovette Choloh, Limehouse and Bumpass all piled in goals. The Vikings attempted to break the momentum but could only watch as the Lions rallied with a 6-1 third quarter run.

Choloh once again found the back of the net to start the final quarter of action, pulling Piedmont within three. Both sides traded goals until the Lions gave it one last push. Three straight goals from sophomore Laura Crone, Spratlin and Choloh narrowed the deficit to just one with 03:21 to play. However, Piedmont remained unable to find the equalizing goal and the Vikings would score with just seconds remaining to end the contest 16-14.

Up next, Piedmont travels to face Sewanee on Saturday at 1 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
-- Berry opened the contest on a 7-0 run, holding Piedmont scoreless until 10:56 in the second quarter.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- Lovette Choloh led all Lions in goals scored with 4.
-- Savannah Limehouse and Merryn Bumpass both posted 3 goals in the contest.
-- Maggi Spratlin's 2 goals and 2 assists gave her a 4 point night.
