DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team was unable to keep pace with the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan Saturday falling 8-3. The Lions trailed by just one heading into the seventh inning but surrendered six runs in the final three innings.
The Battling Bishops were the first to score with one run on three hits in the second inning as three straight singles drove in the first run of the game. Piedmont's
Peyton Irvin earned the start going five innings and allowing two earned runs, but took the loss as Piedmont's offense could not come from behind in the end.
Piedmont did answer back in the third inning to tie the game after a pair of hits by
Tyler Nelson and
Jackson Randolph. N.C. Wesleyan added another run in the fifth to reclaim the lead and tacked on two more in the seventh after Piedmont went to the bullpen.
Freshman
Tyner Simpson earned his first work in the Green and Gold pitching 1.2 innings allowing the two runs in the seventh. Piedmont would again answer with a run in the bottom of the frame to trail 4-1 heading to the eighth.
It looked to be within reach until the top of the ninth when N.C. Wesleyan added four runs on three hits and two errors, but did leave the bases loaded. Down 8-2, Piedmont attempted to rally at the end as
Jack Gilsenan scored on a balk, but the Lions moved to 0-2.
The Lions were outhit in the game 14 to five and committed four errors to the Battling Bishops zero.
Piedmont will take on Spalding in the weekend finale on Sunday at 2 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont trailed by just one heading into the seventh inning, but two runs in the seventh put N.C. Wesleyan ahead for good.

Tyler Nelson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored as Piedmont had just five hits in the game.
