Late Rally Not Enough in Baseball's 9-4 Loss to Spalding

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Spalding 9, Piedmont 4
Records: Piedmont, 0-3; Spalding, 2-1

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team used a late rally to put runs on the board but it was not enough in a 9-4 loss to Spalding Sunday. Starter Adam Metivier took the loss though he surrendered just three of the nine runs.

The Lions fell behind in the fourth inning by a single run but answered back to tie it in the bottom of the frame. Piedmont manufactured a run before putting a hit on the board after a walk, wild pitch and fly out led to a sacrifice fly by Kyle Carlson.

Spalding had gotten hot however and scored in every inning until the ninth. The Golden Eagles added two runs on four hits in the fifth and managed a 3-run homerun in the sixth inning to lead 6-1.

Piedmont showed life in the bottom of the eighth as the Lions sent in pinch runners and scored three runs on three hits. Spencer Muffuletto had a 2-RBI triple and was then driven in by Cole Harof making it 9-4, but that was all the offense Piedmont could muster.

Trace Cate singled in the inning and was the only Lion to account for two hits in the game. The Lions were outhit in the contest 19-4 as offense was hard to come by this weekend with 13 hits over the three games.

Piedmont used six pitchers in the contest and a total of 22 players saw the field.

Piedmont will take on Randolph-Macon on Friday, February 23 at 4 p.m. in tournament action at the Milkjug next weekend.

TURNING POINT:
--In the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles managed two runs on four hits and continued to pour it on with three more runs in the sixth.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Freshman Spencer Muffuletto tripled in the eighth inning to drive in two runs and spark Piedmont's rally.
