MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Piedmont University baseball team could not hold on for a series opening victory Friday evening as Huntingdon scored two in the bottom of the ninth for a walkoff win 7-6.
Piedmont was first on the board with two runs in the top of the second off a
MAC BARTON triple. The Hawks were able to put up a big spot in the third inning with four runs to claim the lead off three hits and a pair of walks.
The Lions were able to answer offensively in the next half inning with three runs on four hits to claim the lead back 5-4, but Huntingdon answered in the home half of the fourth to knot the game at five.
Piedmont did not record a hit again until the seventh inning but in the seventh, back-to-back doubles by
TYLER NELSON and
CARTER BALLSTADT set up a sac fly opportunity for
KYLE CARLSON to bring home the go-ahead run.
It all looked to be in the Lions favor after the Hawks stranded two in the eighth, but in the ninth, a leadoff error proved costly. Huntingdon tied the contest with one out and won on a walkoff sac fly.
