DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont men's tennis team delivered an 8-1 rout over Huntingdon in its final regular season home contest of the season on Saturday afternoon.
On a day in which they honored seniors
LEO GALARZA and
COOPER KEWORK for their contributions to the program and welcomed a number of alumni back to campus, the Lions dominated on the court, winning all three doubles lines in convincing fashion before taking 5-of-6 singles matches to improve to 4-1 in the CCS with one match to play.
Playing their first match of the season at No. 3 doubles, the duo of
ALBERTO NUNEZ and
JACKSON TRAYLOR left no doubt in an 8-0 win to put the first point of the match on the board for Piedmont. Minutes later,
YANNICK WASSMER NAVARRO and
MIKE PORCELLI put the finishing touches on a dominant 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Lions closed out the doubles sweep as the tandem of
SILAS SANDLES and
SIMON JOHNSTONEÂ Â improved to 3-0 at No. 1 doubles on the season with an 8-1 win.
The Hawks were able to get on the board with a three-set win at No. 6 singles that finished first. However, the Lions quickly reestablished control of the match, putting up five two-set victories the rest of the way.
Traylor continued his perfect afternoon, not losing a game in a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing at No. 3 singles. That left Nunez to bring home the clinch, with a clinical 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 to give Piedmont a 5-1 lead.
Playing out the last three matches, the Lions kept their foot on the gas pedal, as Wassmer Navarro (6-2, 6-0),
JC FOSTER (6-2, 6-1) and
RYAN RAUGH (7-6 (6), 6-1) each closed strong to seal the deal.
The win jumps Piedmont firmly into the No. 2 spot in the conference with one match left to play.
The Lions are scheduled to conclude their regular season on the road against Belhaven next Saturday, April 22 at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Traylor did not lose a single game across a dominant doubles and singles performance for the junior.
- Nunez lost just one total game, winning 8-0 in doubles with Traylor and producing a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
