Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season with 7-2 Win at Belhaven

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 7, Belhaven 2

JACKSON, Miss. - The Piedmont men's tennis team won its third consecutive conference match to close out the season, rolling past Belhaven 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in Mississippi.

The Lions set the tone early, delivering a doubles sweep before taking four out of six singles lines to clinch the No. 2 seed for the upcoming inaugural CCS Tournament.

Fittingly, it was the duo of CONNOR PHELPS and RYAN RAUGH that put the first point of the match on the board for the Lions, as they cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. The win improves the duo to 11-2 in dual matches together this season. Shortly after, the team of YANNICK WASSMER NAVARRO and MIKE PORCELLI picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 2, moving them to 4-1 together this season while SILAS SANDLES and SIMON JOHNSTONE completed the doubles sweep, also winning 8-4 at No. 1. Johnstone and Sandles are now 8-1 in dual matches together, including a perfect 4-0 at No. 1.

Needing just two singles wins to clinch the match, the Lions were dominant in the No 3 through No. 6 spots to take the match. Porcelli made it 4-0 Lions with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 before the Blazers captured a point with a win at No. 1 singles.

However, the momentum was short lived, as the Lions clinched the match thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 victory from ALBERTO NUNEZ at No. 3.

Although Belhaven picked up an additional point at No. 2 singles, JACKSON TRAYLOR (6-0, 6-1) and Sandles (6-2, 6-4) each delivered straight set wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots to give Piedmont the 7-2 victory.

Up next, the Lions will begin play as the No. 2 seed in the CCS Tournament, beginning this Thursday, April 27 in Rome, Georgia.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Piedmont continued to play strong in doubles, as the three teams have a combined 23-4 dual record after Saturday's match.
