LaGRANGE, Ga. - The Piedmont men's tennis team returned to action for the first time in nearly two weeks and rolled past LaGrange, 9-0, on Friday afternoon.
The win moves the Lions to 3-1 in the CCS and gives them their 11th overall win of the season.
Piedmont was dominant in winning all three doubles matches and continued the momentum into singles action, sweeping the six lines, with five of the six wins coming in straight sets.
The reliable No. 3 doubles team of
CONNOR PHELPS and
RYAN RAUGHÂ put the first point of the match on the board for the Lions, rolling to an 8-1 victory for the duo's 11th win together this spring. They were quickly followed by an 8-1 victory at No. 2 from
MIKE PORCELLI and
YANNICK WASSMER NAVARRO as they improved to 2-0 together at No. 2 doubles this season.
The Panthers pushed the Lions at No. 1, but
SILAS SANDLES and
SIMON JOHNSTONE were able to prevail, 8-5, to complete the doubles sweep for the Lions.
Leading 3-0 and needing just two singles matches to clinch, those came in short order for Piedmont.
BRYCE VANORDER put the Lions one win away from clinching with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 before Porcelli provided the clincher in his return to the courts. Playing in his first singles match in over a month, the junior outlasted his opponent in a 6-2, 6-4 victory to clinch the match for Piedmont at 5-0.
In the only match that was pushed to a third set, the freshman Wassmer Navarro rallied back from dropping the first set to cruise in the second and then take a 10-point match tiebreaker to win, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4).
The final three lines of singles saw Piedmont continue to dominate, as it lost just three total games across the six sets.
KODY DILLS was perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 while Phelps (6-2, 6-0) and Johnstone (6-1, 6-0) helped concluded the festivities in short order and complete the shutout.
Up next, the Lions will host Huntingdon in their penultimate conference match of the regular season and final scheduled home match on Saturday at 11 a.m. After the match, seniors
COOPER KEWORK and
LEO GALARZA will be honored for their contributions to the program.
