Eighth Inning Comeback Lifts Lions to 4-2 Win Over Ferrum

Records: Piedmont, 9-3; Ferrum 3-8

DEMOREST, Ga. - In need of a comeback, the Piedmont baseball team delivered in the bottom of the eighth with three runs to claim a 4-2 win over Ferrum Sunday. The win marked Piedmont's second eighth inning comeback of the season at Loudermilk Field.

The win also marked a weekend sweep for the Lions at home with two weekend sweeps under their belt at the Jug.

NATHAN MIX drove in the game-tying run while KOLTON HICKS accounted for the game-winning RBI.

It was a hot start for the Panthers with a lead-off homer in the first to quickly take a 1-0 lead. ADAM METIVIER settled in to pitch four innings allowing just the one run and five hits.

Piedmont was able to answer in the bottom of the first as KYLE CARLSON doubled to drive in CARTER BALLSTADT and knot the game at one.

That was where the score remained until the sixth inning when Ferrum added another run. Piedmont left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth while Ferrum left them loaded in the top of the fifth.

The Panthers led 2-1 after the top of the sixth and clung to the lead until the eighth inning. The Lions had runners on the corners for NATHAN MIX who hit an RBI single to tie it up.

Then just three batters later, KOLTON HICKS reached on an error and the go-ahead run scored to put Piedmont ahead 4-2.

CARTER BALLSTADT entered to pitch and closed out the game in the ninth earning the save, his second of the season. He struck out the first batter he faced, walked one and got out of the inning with a double play.

ZACH COURTWRIGHT earned the win for Piedmont, his first of his career, moving his record to 1-1.

The Lions will host Oglethorpe Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Loudermilk Field.
