DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University women's lacrosse team dropped a high scoring contest against Southern Virginia at home, 21-15.

Southern Virginia came out swinging, scoring the first three goals of the game. The Knights defense held strong for the majority of the first period until CLARA WELCH got the Lady Lions on the board. LINDLEY WARD ended the scoring in the period with her only goal of the game, making it 3-2 after one.

Out of the short break, the Knights buried Piedmont, going on a 8-0 run as they looked to seal the contest early. The run was broken by MERRYN BUMPASS and after a pair of goals, Piedmont escaped to the half trailing 12-5.

After conceding the first goal of the second half, Piedmont went on a four goal run as the Knights scrambled for an answer. AVA TRANKINA, LOVETTE CHOLOH, Welch and Bumpass all scored unassisted to pull the contest within four. However, Southern Virginia finally stemmed the bleeding with three of their own and took a seven goal lead into the final period.

Both teams fought hard in the final period of action as Piedmont was once again able to close the gap to just four goals but ultimately the offensive firepower of Southern Virginia proved to be too much. The game ended with a final score of 21-15. 

TURNING POINT:
-- Southern Virginia answered with three goals of their own following a four goal run by Piedmont late in the 3rd period. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
-- CLARA WELCH scored 4 goals in the contest and added 2 caused turnovers and 3 draw controls. 
-- AVA TRANKINA had a hat trick for the Lady Lions while adding 2 caused turnovers, 4 draw controls and a team leading 3 ground balls.
-- LOVETTE CHOLOH had 4 draw controls and 4 caused turnovers.
-- MERRYN BUMPASS scored 3 goals and had 3 assists.
