Ward's Late Winner Propels Lions Over Tigers

NEED TO KNOW:
Score:  Piedmont 20, Sewanee 19
Records: Piedmont, 2-2; Sewanee, 0-2

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University women's lacrosse team won a tightly contested game in the final seconds of regulation.

The Lady Lions led by as many as six in the second half but a fierce comeback from the Tigers took the game down to the wire where Senior LINDLEY WARD scored the decisive goal.

The contest was a barn burner from start as both teams traded leads. Sewanee went on an early three-goal run before Piedmont closed the gap, trailing by just one at the end of the first period. With 3 goals in the first, CLARA WELCH secured a hat trick early.

In the second, Piedmont opened with three unanswered goals from MACHAELA SMITH, MAGGI SPRATLIN and AVA TRANKINA, pushing the lead to two. The lead would slim to one as the teams traded goals before the Tigers found one more before the half expired, making the score 10-9.

Piedmont excelled coming out of the half, taking the fight to the Tigers and looking to run away with the contest. Following a goal from Ward, and an answer from Sewanee, the Lady Lions went on a 6-2 run to close out the third, leaving Sewanee trailing 17-12 going into the fourth.

However, the Tigers refused to go quietly, rallying back with four straight goals and narrowing the contest to 17-16. MERRYN BUMPASS and Ward combined for two more Lady Lions goals but the Tigers continued marching forward, once again responding with three straight and tying the contest with just under seven minutes to play.

Each squad had opportunities to retake the lead in the final minutes of play but ultimately, only Ward would find the back of the net. After being fouled and given a free position look with just 6 seconds on the clock, the senior remained unfazed by the pressure and slotted home the game winner.

The victory over the Tigers snaps a five game losing streak against Sewanee for the program that dated back all the way to the 2017 season.

Up next, the Lady Lions hit the road to take on Warren Wilson College on Wednesday, March 1.
