Lions Unable to Rally Past Susquehanna in 7-6 Loss

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - A late rally by the Lions was not enough against Susquehanna Friday as Piedmont dropped a 7-6 contest at the D3baseball.com showcase. Piedmont held the lead midway through the sixth but it disappeared quickly with a four-spot for the River Hawks. 

Piedmont was first on the board as NATHAN MIX drove in KOLTON HICKS, but Susquehanna answered back in the fourth in a big way. A 3-run homer put the River Hawks out in front 3-1 with just three hits on the board. 

Piedmont starter ZEKE SWARTZ pitched 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs and just three hits while striking out nine. At one point, Swartz struck out six straight in the second and third innings. 

The Lions jumped out again in the fifth with their own crooked number scoring three on three hits to lead 4-3, but in the sixth, the River Hawks made a run. 

Three walks and two hits helped Susquehanna to four runs to claim a 7-4 lead and Piedmont was unable to make enough of a late push. 

Piedmont managed one run in the seventh and attempted a rally in the ninth which saw one run cross, but the threat ended with a strikeout. 

The Lions are back in action Saturday facing Rochester at 9:30 a.m.

TURNING POINT:
--A four-spot in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the River Hawks claimed the lead. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--CARTER BALLSTADT was 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored while CARSON STROVINSKAS went 3-for-5 with two RBI. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
--Piedmont held the River Hawks to just five hits in the contest but those were key contributions with runners in scoring position. 
--Piedmont's two losses this season have come by the same score, 7-6.
