BREVARD, N.C. - After winning a pair of close matches to start the season, the Piedmont men's tennis team left no doubt on Wednesday afternoon in a 9-0 sweep at Brevard.

The Lions won two of the three doubles matches easily, eked out a third, and then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets on the way to the victory.

The afternoon started as YANNICK WASSMER NAVARRO and ALBERTO NUNEZ teamed up for the first time this season with an 8-1 win at No. 1 before SIMON JOHNSTONE and RYAN RAUGH picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2.

That left the No. 3 doubles team of LEO GALARZA and KODY DILLS to complete the sweep, and they prevailed 8-7 (5), battling to take the breaker and put even more momentum on Piedmont's side heading into singles.

Playing in his first collegiate match, freshman NILE MORRIS was dominant at No. 5 singles, losing just one game (6-0, 6-1) and putting the Lions a point away from clinching.

In his first start at No. 1 singles this season, the sophomore Nunez delivered the clincher with a clinical 6-1, 6-2 victory. Wassmer Navarro then moved to 2-1 in singles on the young season with a 6-3, 6-1 over Ethan McGee at No. 2.

Seeing his first action of the spring, sophomore JC FOSTER rolled in his first set at No. 6 before taking a second-set tiebreaker to make it 8-0 Lions. 

Closing things out, newcomer Johnstone took a third set superbreaker, 10-5, giving Piedmont its first 9-0 sweep of the season. Johnstone took the first set ,6-3, before falling in the second.

Up next, the Lions will head south to battle Birmingham-Southern in a tough road test this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
