Baseball Rolls Past Wilmington 12-2 for Weekend Sweep

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team left no doubt on Sunday with a 12-2 win over Wilmington to complete a weekend sweep at the Piedmont Early Spring Tournament. 

The Lions were able to score early and often with all 12 runs coming in the first five innings. The Quakers were forced to send out seven pitchers in the game with none throwing longer than 2.1 innings. 
Piedmont used two hits to score two runs in the first with some help along the way and tacked on two more in the second. ADAM METIVIER was dealing from the mound for the Lions throwing six innings allowing seven hits and just two earned runs. 

The Lions' offense was explosive in both the fourth and fifth innings with a four-spot each time. Ten of Piedmont's 15 hits came in those two innings combined. 

Piedmont had three extra base hits in the game and a plethora of singles. Nine different Lions recorded a hit with TRACE CATE leading the way going 4-for-4. CARTER BALLSTADT, KOLTON HICKS and GRANT OLSON all posted a pair of hits. 

The Piedmont pitching staff also did not allow a walk in the contest while the Quakers walked nine batters. 

The Lions are back in action Thursday on the road in Kannapolis, N.C. taking on Washington and Lee at the D3baseball.com showcase. 

TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont jumped out early with two runs in the first and second innings each to claim the lead and never looked back. 
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--TRACE CATE had a phenomenal day going 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
--This is the second time this season the Piedmont offense has scored 12 runs.
