DEMOREST, Ga. - Thanks to an eighth inning rally, the Piedmont University baseball team came out victorious on opening night at home with a 9-7 win over La Verne. The Lions needed three runs in the bottom of the eighth and KYLE CARLSON delivered with a 2-RBI double to claim the lead.

La Verne jumped out to an early lead and both sides were hot out of the gate, despite a frigid evening. The two were knotted at four all after three innings and turned in clean sheets in the fourth and fifth.

BODIE EILERTSON earned the start for the Lions going 4.2 innings before giving way to BRADEN SIMMS. Simms kept the Lions in it with three innings of work.

Piedmont claimed the lead in the sixth inning as COLE ELLIS drove in NATHAN MIX and JACK GILSENAN to claim a 6-4 advantage. The Leopards tacked one on in the seventh but used a two-RBI double in the eighth to seize the lead and momentum for a time.

The Lions used a two-out rally in the eighth as Ellis doubled followed by a TRACE CATE walk. CARTER BALLSTADT singled to drive in Ellis and tie the game at seven. In the next at bat, the clean-up hitter delivered as Carlson smashed one to right center to drive in Cate and Ballstadt and claim the lead for good.
