Lions Drop Close Call 71-69 at Berea

BEREA, Ky. - A last-second make by the Berea Mountaineers cost the Piedmont men's basketball team as the Lions fell 71-69 on the road Sunday.

Piedmont led by as many as eight in the opening minutes of the contest and held Berea scoreless over nearly the first three minutes of action. Piedmont led 10-2 at the 15:21 mark in the first half, but the Mountaineers claimed the lead after three straight possessions with 3-pointers. 

Berea led 17-14 and the lead stayed at three or under until Piedmont claimed a four point advantage when ANDREW STIMPSON banked a three with 2:43 to play till the break. 

At the half, Piedmont led 33-30, but Berea went on a 6-0 run out of the break to claim the lead. The Mountaineers led by as many as seven but in the final 10 minutes of play, neither team led by more than four. 

Berea's Trey Minter converted an and-one with 3:22 to go giving the Mountaineers a 69-66 lead. Jolly made a layup to cut it to one and DEVIN DEAN was fouled with 2:38 to go. After missing the first, he made the second to tie the game at 69.

Neither team was able to score over the final 2:38 until the Mountaineers made a jumper with four seconds remaining. After a foul on the inbounds, Piedmont's final offensive possession ended in a turnover. 

Up next, Piedmont hosts Belhaven on Friday at 7 p.m. inside Cave Arena. 

TURNING POINT:
--Berea banked a jumper with four seconds remaining to take the lead and had fouls to give as Piedmont was unable to convert on its last possession. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--RYAN JOLLY led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds marking his first double-double of the season. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Piedmont has played three straight contests with the game tied inside the final 2:30 minutes going 1-2 in those three games.
