Lady Lions Drop Pair to Conclude Opening Weekend

DANVILLE, Va. - Despite clawing back to force a deciding fifth set against Roanoke Saturday, the Piedmont Volleyball team was unable to capitalize dropping a pair of matches to William Peace and Roanoke.

Match 1: William Peace 3, Piedmont 0

The Lady Lions struggled out of the gate against the Pacers and were swept 3-0 dropping sets 25-10, 25-23, 25-18. Piedmont was unable to keep pace with William Peace as the Pacers totaled 42 kills to Piedmont's 20. 

In the second set, Piedmont led 20-16 but was unable to keep the Pacers at bay down the stretch. The Lady Lions led 11-8 in the third set but a 9-0 run by the Pacers proved to be too much to overcome. 

TAYLOR HERRMANN added 14 digs in the match while BROOKLYN GUNN had 11 assists. 

Match 2: Roanoke 3, Piedmont 2

Against Roanoke, it was a battle down to the wire as Piedmont dropped a close five-set thriller. The Lady Lions fell behind 2-0 dropping sets 25-21 and 25-23 before storming back to knot it up at 2-2 with 25-15 and 28-26 wins in the third and fourth sets. 

In the fifth set, Piedmont led 14-10 but Roanoke stole five straight points to lead 15-14 and eventually take the deciding set 17-15. 

HANNAH KATE CHADWELL led Piedmont with 11 kills in the match followed by JESSICA SCONYERS adding nine. Sconyers also was a threat defensively as she had five blocks while Herrmann totaled 30 digs.

Up next, Piedmont will head to Atlanta to face Oglethorpe Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--JESSICA SCONYERS had five total blocks in the match against Roanoke while adding nine kills.

--The Roanoke match marked Piedmont's first five set match of the season.
