Lions Fall 2-0 in Saturday Road Game at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Piedmont men's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2022 season, 2-0, at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers were able to score a single goal in each half and stifled the Piedmont offense in the win.

The Lions hung tough in the early going, holding Sewanee off the scoreboard until the 23rd minute, when Will Hawgood broke the scoreless tie off an assist from Payne Gridley.

Sewanee was unable to increase its lead thanks to solid defense from the Lions, who were only able to get off one shot in the first 45 minutes.

The second half brought more of the same, as the Lions only totaled three shots in the second half. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Tigers extended their lead as Zach Shunnarah converted a penalty kick goal to make it 2-0.

From there, Sewanee was able to hold onto its lead the rest of the way and earn the shutout.

Despite the loss, it was another impressive performance in goal for freshman BOBBY WOOD, who made five saves with one of his two goals allowed being a penalty kick.

Forward JASON AUSSIN totaled four of the seven shots from the Lions.

Up next, Piedmont will have its home opener this coming Wednesday, Sept. 7 against Reinhardt at 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Sewanee scored the only goal it needed in the 23rd minute and shut down the Piedmont offense the rest of the way, adding a second goal early in the second half.
