Volleyball Drops CCS Contests Against Belhaven, Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Piedmont volleyball team dropped a pair of conference matches in the first Collegiate Conference of the South tri-match of the season. 

It was a tough loss to Belhaven as the Lady Lions fought to five sets, but the host team Maryville made quick work with a 3-0 final in the second match of the day. 

Match 1: Belhaven 3, Piedmont 2

The Lady Lions took an early lead, but fell behind 2-1 entering the fourth set. Piedmont claimed the first set 25-22 but lost the next two 25-13 and 25-20. 

In the fouth, Piedmont rallied to claim a 25-19 win with the deciding fifth set coming. In the fifth, Piedmont trailed 14-10 at match point, and clawed back to force extra points. 

In an absolute battle, the Lady Lions fought to the end when the Blazers claimed a 22-20 win in the fifth set to take the match. 

JESSICA SCONYERS led Piedmont with 10 kills while JIA WEATHERSBY and KATIE HUBBARD each added nine. JENNIFER HERRERA led Piedmont with 19 assists as it was a fairly even split with BROOKLYN GUNN adding 17. 

Match 2: Maryville 3, Piedmont 0

The Scots made quick work in the final match of the day claiming the win in straight sets 25-10, 25-18, 25-17. Piedmont posted just 15 kills to Maryville's 52 in the match. 

Maryville's Isabella Samson tallied 20 kills while Amii Ingalls added 18. TAYLOR HERRMANN posted 11 digs against the Scot accounting for 11 of Piedmont's 27. 

Up next, the Lady Lions will return home to host Agnes Scott on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
--It took a fight to extras in the deciding fifth set as Piedmont clawed back from down 14-10 to force a 22-20 final in the fifth against Belhaven. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--JIA WEATHERSBY posted two career-high's Saturday against Belhaven with nine kills while adding six blocks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--This marked just the fifth meeting against Belhaven for Piedmont volleyball and the first as a conference member.
