DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont volleyball team won the first set but fell in four to Bob Jones on Tuesday night at Cave Arena.
The Lady Lions had an impressive first set, pulling away to win 25-20. However, Bob Jones rallied late in the second set and took the momentum, winning the next three sets to take the match.
Sophomores
JENNA ASH and
JESSICA SCONYERS each reached double digit kills with 10 each to lead Piedmont. Sconyers also had a pair of block assists.
The Lady Lions emerged victorious in a back-and-forth first set thanks to an 8-2 run to end it. Bob Jones took an 18-17 lead, but a pair of aces from
BROOKLYN GUNN sparked the Lady Lions to a 1-0 lead in the match.
JENNA ASH had five kills with a .400 hitting percentage including an emphatic kill to give Piedmont a 24-20 lead late.
The Bruins flipped the script in the second set, using a late rally to overtake the Lady Lions and even the match at 1-1. Piedmont led 15-12 and appeared to have monentum. However, after a Bob Jones timeout, it used a 6-0 run to force a Piedmont timeout at 18-15. From there, the Bruins held off Piedmont to close out the set at 25-20.
For the third straight set, Piedmont jumped in front early, leading 8-6 early in the third. However, Bob Jones quickly responded with a 6-1 run to lead 12-9. Piedmont rallied back to tie the score at 13, but a Bruins run extended their lead and they led the rest of the set to lead 2-1.
With the momentum on their side, Bob Jones raced out to an early lead in the fourth set and never looked back, closing out the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
Up next, the Lady Lions will open up Collegiate Conference of the South play, battling Wesleyan on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- Bob Jones was trailing midway through the second set, but rallied to overtake the Lady Lions 25-20 in the second set and took control of the match from there.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Sconyers' 10 kills marked a season high for the sophomore.
- Three Lady Lions recorded double digit digs with
TAYLOR HERRMANN leading with 25.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Bruins had 55 kills compared to 45 for Piedmont.
