MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Piedmont men's tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Huntingdon Invitational, winning 16 total matches over four different opponents.
The Lions took on Division III foes Huntingdon, Oglethorpe and Belhaven, while also battling JUCO Wallace State. Against its DIII opponents, the Lions compiled a 9-3 singles record and were a perfect 6-0 in doubles matches.
The weekend was highlighted by an impressive performance by the Lions against SAA foe Oglethorpe. Piedmont swept the Stormy Petrels winning all three doubles lines and splitting three singles lines.
Newcomer Yannick Wassmer Navarro delivered a 7-5, 6-1 win over Kirk Kiker from Oglethorpe.Â
Fellow newcomer
CONNOR PHELPS won both of his singles matches, including Piedmont's lone win over Wallace State.
Against its two Collegiate Conference of the South foes, the Lions dominated, sweeping all six singles matches over Huntingdon and and all three singles matches against Belhaven.
Doubles play was highlighted by Wassmer and
ALBERTO NUNEZ's 8-6 victory over the top doubles team from Oglethorpe.
Fresh off an outstanding sophomore,
BRYCE VANORDERÂ rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 singles win over Cameron Burkes from Oglethorpe and partnered with
KODY DILLS to defeat a Belhaven doubles team in a tiebreaker.
Against Huntingdon, the Lions won all six singles lines with five of the wins coming from freshmen or sophomores.
Up next, the Lions will wrap up their fall campaign with a one-day tournament next Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Pfeiffer Invitational.
