BEREA, Ky. - The Piedmont University baseball team moved to 5-1 in USA South play completing a series sweep at Berea Sunday with a 9-6 win.
Brayden Simms earned the win while
TYLER ROON picked up his first save of the season pitching the final four innings. The Lions took a commanding 5-0 lead in the first three innings, but the Mountaineers' offense came alive Sunday.
Berea scored once in the third and added another pair of runs in the fourth making it a 5-3 Piedmont lead. The Lions had runners on the corners in the seventh inning and on a pickoff play back to first,
HUNTER CAIN was out but
CARTER BALLSTADT scored on the play.
In the eighth, Piedmont added two more runs on an error after a hit by pitch and a walk. The Mountaineers managed three runs on four hits in the eighth but Roon shut down the comeback in the ninth.
Up next, the Lions will play at Birmingham-Southern Tuesday at 7 p.m.

--Berea made it a close contest with a three-run eighth inning but
TYLER ROON closed out the contest to earn the save.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Brayden Simms moved to 3-0 this season pitching five innings giving up eight hits and striking out six.

--Piedmont had six hit batters in the contest.
