Seventh Inning Rally by Scots Costs Piedmont in 7-3 Loss

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 3, Covenant 7
Records: Piedmont, 13-12-1; Covenant, 11-15

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont baseball team couldn't overcome a rough seventh inning in a 7-3 loss to Covenant Friday evening at Loudermilk Field. Piedmont held a 3-0 lead through six innings, but the Scots proved victorious in game one of the series.

PEYTON IRVIN took the loss but was impressive through the first six innings. After Irvin set down the Scots in order in the first, he allowed his first baserunner on an error to lead off the second. However, he was able to induce an inning-ending double play to erase the threat.

Irvin faced the minimum through three innings as the Piedmont defense was up to the task early. The Scots were finally able to crack the hit column in the fourth, but Irvin buckled down with his first strikeout to end the frame and strand the runner at first.

In the fifth, the Piedmont offense went to work after a leadoff single by GRANT OLSON paired with back-to-back walks loaded the bases with no outs. A wild pitch brought the first run of the game in and NOAH AARON had an RBI groundout to drive in the second run.

ALEX GONZALEZ capped it off with an RBI single to bring in SCOTT LYON as Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with an RBI against his former team.

Irvin continued to deal retiring nine straight batters from the 4th-6th innings before the game got away from the Lions in the seventh. Irvin faced seven batters in the seventh before giving way to TYLER ROON. Irvin took the loss despite giving up just two earned runs.

Roon closed out the seventh and pitched the eighth before giving way to JUSTIN MANUS in the ninth.

Up next, a doubleheader Saturday will complete the series. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
--The Scots were able to score seven runs on three hits in the seventh inning combined with four walks and a hit batter.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--GRANT OLSON was the lone Lion with a multi-hit performance going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

NEWS AND NOTES:
