Piedmont Baseball Drops Series Opener to Huntingdon 10-7

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team dropped the series opener to Huntingdon College Friday evening at Loudermilk Field 10-7. 

The deep ball was the key component in this contest as there were a total of five home runs between the two teams. 

In the first, the Hawks were able to capitalize and get on the board, but Piedmont answered back quickly as ALEX GONZALEZ cranked a solo shot to tie it up. 
 
Piedmont took the lead in the second, but the Hawks were clawing back in the third. Daniel Phillips hit his first of two homers in the third with a 3-run blast to lead 4-2. CARTER BALLSTADT tripled to lead off in the fourth and was driven in on sac fly by KYLE CARLSON makng it a one-run game. 

The Hawks had another homer in the fourth with a 2-run shot by Andrew Knight to lead 6-3 and D. Phillips hit his second of the night in the following inning with a 2-run homer giving him five RBI in the contest through the fifth. 

Piedmont tacked on two in the sixth to cut into the lead, trailing 8-5, until CARTER BALLSTADT got on the homerun train with his 10th homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh. 
  The Lions continued to threaten but the Hawks were able to add insurance in the ninth and claim the win 10-7. 

Up next, Piedmont hosts Huntingdon for game two of the series Saturday at 3 p.m. at Loudermilk Field. 

TURNING POINT:
--Daniel Phillips' pair of homers proved to be the difference in the contest as he accounted for a total of six RBI, five on the two homers. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--CARTER BALLSTADT became the only Lion to record double-digit homers in a single season as he claimed the single-season homer record at LaGrange last weekend. 
--Ballstadt finished a single shy of the cycle. 

NEWS AND NOTES:
--The ball was flying Friday as a total of five homers were hit in the contest.
