Lions Cruise in Doubleheader Sweep at Berea

BEREA, Ky. - The Piedmont baseball team swept Berea in a doubleheader Saturday leaving no doubt in a 16-1 win in eight innings and a 13-1 victory in game two. 

The Lions totaled 23 hits across the two games and scored 29 runs. 

Game 1: Piedmont 16, Berea 1 F/8

The Lions were on the board early in game one without a hit as the Mountaineers allowed three walks and three stolen bases in the inning. Berea was able to even the score at one after the first inning. 

Piedmont added another four runs in the second inning including a bases clearing double by CARTER BALLSTADT. The offense was stiffled over the middle innings maintaining a 5-1 lead until the Lions roared back in the sixth. 

The Lions scored five runs on four hits in the sixth then topped that with six runs on three hits in the seventh. In the seventh, SCOTT LYON had a bases clearing triple making it 15-1. 

In game one, ALEX GONZALEZ, Ballstadt and BRAYDEN BROOKS recorded two hits each. Berea also walked 10 Piedmont batters and the Lions managed seven stolen bases in the game. 

Game 2: Piedmont 13, Berea 1

Game two was much of the same as Piedmont cruised thanks to several big innings yet again. In the first, Ballstadt capped off an already impressive performance with a home run. 

Berea jumped on the board in the home half of the first to tie it but not for long. Piedmont added 13 hits in game two with eight being extra base hits. 

JACKSON RANDOLPH hit his first home run in the fifth beginning a six run inning for the Lions. Randolph totaled three RBI in the inning as he had a two-RBI double in the same inning after the Lions batted around. 

Piedmont's pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in the contest as JAKE GARNER earned his first collegiate win striking out six over six innings of work. 

Up next, the Lions will conclude the series with a single contest Sunday. 

TURNING POINT:
--The Lions took control in the second inning of game one with four runs including a bases clearing double by CARTER BALLSTADT.
--It was again the second inning of game two that proved to be the difference with Piedmont scoring two to take the lead. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--PEYTON IRVIN and JAKE GARNER earned wins Saturday with Irvin improving to 2-3 overall while Garner earned his first collegiate victory.
--Piedmont totaled 14 extra base hits in the contest including a pair of home runs and three triples.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--CARTER BALLSTADT was a single away from hitting for the cycle across the doubleheader.
