MONTGOMERY, Ala. - For the second straight game, the Piedmont women's lacrosse team used a second half comeback, this time resulting in a 15-11 road win over Huntingdon on Tuesday night in Alabama.
The Lady Lions trailed 9-8 in the third quarter, but outscored the Hawks 6-3 the rest of the way to improve to 6-3 in the USA South.
Piedmont had a balanced scoring attack with four players delivering hat tricks on the day. Freshman
ALY REECE led the way with four goals which ties her season high.
MAGGI SPRATLIN,
LINDLEY WARD and
MERRYN BUMPASSÂ scored three times each with Spratlin dishing out a team-best three assists.
Goalie
KELLIANNE SCHLOSSER was steady with nine goals in the win.
The game was back and forth in the early going as the Hawks scored the opening two goals of the game before Piedmont added three in a row to take its first lead of the contest.
Huntingdon was able to retake the lead after one quarter with two quick goals in response. However, for the second time in the first half, the Lions answered a 2-0 run with a 3-0 run of their own, as Spratlin scored two of her three goals to put Piedmont up 6-4.
Although the Lions led 8-6 going to the break, Huntingdon fought back, with three straight to retake the lead once more. This time, it was the last lead it would have, as the Lions took control with a furious rally that was capped by three straight goals from Reece that were assisted by Spratlin.
With the lead, the Lions controlled possession in a low-scoring fourth quarter and held on to win 15-11.
Up next, Piedmont will play its final regular season home game, hosting Meredith this Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- Piedmont used a 5-0 run in the third quarter, punctuated by three goals from
ALY REECE, to take control of the contest.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Reece's four-goal performance led the team and marked the third time this season she has reached that number.
- Bumpass delivered her fourth consecutive hat trick.
- Spratlin delivered her second career hat trick and fourth game with at least three assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Lions held a 37-21 shot advantage.
