DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team rallied back from a pair of deficits to overtake Pfeiffer 12-10 on Friday afternoon in Demorest.
The Lady Lions trailed 5-0 early and 10-6 late, but
CARA CRUMP's game-winning goal late in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the 12-10 victory.
Â
The win marks Piedmont's third in a row after a 2-1 road trip to North Carolina last week.
It was a game of large momentum swings, as the Falcons led 5-0 after the end of the first quarter. Piedmont then dominated the second quarter, delivering six straight goals to lead 6-5 before Pfeiffer responded by scoring the final two of the first half to lead 7-6 going to the break.
The Falcons kept the momentum going into the third, with three straight goals, all by Analise Robinson, to lead 10-6 with 8:22 left in the third quarter.
However, from that point forward, it was all Lions. Neither team scored for almost six minutes until
ALY REECE found the back of the net off a perfect feed from
MAGGI SPRATLIN to make it 10-7 Falcons.
MERRYN BUMPASS added a goal to make it 10-8 before Reece found Spratlin to make it a one-goal game going to the final quarter.
Freshman
KAYLEE MORELAND knotted the score up at 10-10 with 5:57 left in the contest before Crump dodged a defender and finished to the bottom left corner of the net to put the Lady Lions back out front, where they stayed, even adding an insurance goal late from
LINDLEY WARD.
The game was evenly matched in the box score, as Piedmont held a 26-25 shot advantage and a 22-19 edge in shots on goal.
Up next, Piedmont will play its final regular season road game, at Huntingdon next Tuesday, April 19 at 6 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- The Piedmont defense stepped up, holding Pfeiffer scoreless over the final 23:22 of the contest. That set the stage for Crump's game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- It was a balanced attack for the Lady Lions as five players scored at least two goals.Â
- Bumpass led with three while Spratlin, Ward, Reece and Crump added two each.
- Freshmen
MALLORY O'BRIEN,
LAUREN KNOWLES and sophomore goalie
KELLIANNE SCHLOSSER each had five ground balls to lead the team.
