Baseball Drops High Scoring Contest at Berry 12-8

ROME, Ga. - It was a high-scoring affair Tuesday but the Piedmont University baseball team ended the evening in the loss column in a 12-8 loss at Berry. The Vikings had 16 hits to Piedmont's 10 but the Lions also posted three errors in the contest to Berry's one. 

Piedmont was first on the board in the first inning as GRANT OLSON singled to drive in a pair giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. Before the end of the inning, the Vikings reclaimed the lead 3-2 after two hits and two errors in the home half. 

The Vikings tacked on another in the second, but in the fourth, Berry broke the game open.

After two singles and a hit by pitch, a grand slam for the Vikings gave them an 8-2 lead chasing starter ZEKE SWARTZ. NATHAN BOYCE entered in relief pitching 2.1 innings allowing 1 run. Piedmont used a total of four pitchers as JUSTIN MANUS and AIDAN COONEY each threw an inning. 

Piedmont did some damage in the sixth inning adding five runs on four hits including a three run home run for ALEX GONZALEZ. Berry scored again in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings while Piedmont added another run in the eighth. 

Up next, Piedmont heads to Berea for a three-game conference series on the road.

TURNING POINT:
--A grand slam for the Vikings in the fourth inning put Berry in front 8-2 and the Vikings never trailed again in the contest. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--ALEX GONZALEZ was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI after a 3-run homer in the 6th inning. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Gonzalez and GRANT OLSON accounted for seven of Piedmont's 10 hits as Olson was 4-for-5 in the contest. 
--The is the second straight contest Piedmont has surrendered a grand slam.
