Women's Lacrosse Drops First Contest Against USA South Foe Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. - In the first meeting between Piedmont and Southern Virginia in women's lacrosse, the Knights were victorious in a 21-8 decision. Piedmont saw six different goal scorers in the contest led by MAGGI SPRATLIN and LINDLEY WARD

Piedmont was first on the board with an unassisted goal by Ward with 9:37 to go in the first quarter. The Knights were quick to answer just 11 seconds later to knot the score at one and added another pair of goals to lead 3-1 at the end of the period. 

In the second quarter, Piedmont was again the first to strike as MERRYN BUMPASS found the back of the net with a man up goal. The Knights took a 7-2 lead before a scoring spurt at the end of the half as Piedmont scored twice in the final 1:30 of play with Ward and MAGGI SPRATLIN adding goals. 

The Lady Lions trailed 8-4 at the half and the third quarter was all Knights as Piedmont was outscored 8-2 in the period to trail 16-6. In the fourth, Piedmont scored the bookend goals of the period with the last coming with just six seconds remaining as REBECCA SLADE scored. 

ALY REECE added a goal and two assist while Bumpass added the only other assist of the game for Piedmont. 

Up next, the Lady Lions will host Centre Thursday at Walker Athletic Complex at 6 p.m.

 TURNING POINT:
--An eight goal third quarter for the Knights put them in front with a convincing 16-6 lead at the end of the third period. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Spratlin and Ward scored a pair of goals each. 
--KELLIANNE SCHLOSSER posted 17 saves in the contest.
