DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont men's tennis team fought hard through a 5-2 home loss against Southern Wesleyan Thursday afternoon.
The Lions fell in all three doubles lines, allowing the Warriors to settle in and maintain the last two singles lines for the overall win.
Southern Wesleyan began the afternoon with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles before winning 6-4 at No. 3 and 6-4 at No. 1 leading the Warriors into singles with a 1-0 lead, as the teams were playing Division II rules.
The Warriors did not hold back as the No. 1 - No. 6 singles matches stepped on court, the Warriors carried three out of the six in straight sets.
Following the Warriors win at No. 1 in straight sets to go up 4-0, the Warriors clinched the afternoon match at No. 4 singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Shortly after, the Warriors advanced further ahead with wins at No. 5 singles (6-3) (6-7), and No. 3 singles (6-3) (7-5) (1-0).
Continuing to battle through, JACKSON TRAYLOR was able to secure the Lions' first point of the afternoon (3-6) (6-0) (6-4) at No. 6. Then, playing No.2 singles at 7-5, 6-4, the Lions secured their second point by BRYCE VANORDER to conclude the afternoon.
Up next, Piedmont will host Johnson & Wales Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- The Warriors set the tone for the afternoon by winning the doubles point, taking all three lines in close matches.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Rebuilding momentum, JACKSON TRAYLOR and BRYCE VANORDER delivered hard fought victories to put the Lions on the scoreboard. VanOrder has now won five straight singles matches after starting the season 0-3.
