Baseball's Late Comeback Falls Short at Oglethorpe 5-3

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team mounted a comeback Thursday against Oglethorpe but the rally fell short in the final frame in a 5-3 loss. Piedmont loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth with the tying run in scoring position but was unable to score in the inning. 

Piedmont was first on the board with a productive 2-run first inning with just one hit in the frame. The Lions used a pair of walks and a hit by pitch in the inning to piece together two runs. 

That was the only inning that more than one run was scored as Piedmont added another run in the fifth taking a 3-1 lead at that point. It was again one hit that did the trick for Piedmont in the fifth inning as KYLE CARLSON singled to score ALEX GONZALEZ. 

Oglethorpe was able to score one in each inning from the fourth through the eighth inning. The Stormy Petrels managed seven hits in the contest but four Piedmont errors contributed to the Oglethorpe win. 

Both teams recorded seven hits with a pair of home runs for the home team and a total of three extra base hits for OU. Piedmont had no extra base hits in the contest with seven singles. 

Up next, the Lions host Brevard to open conference play next weekend at home. 

TURNING POINT:
--The Stormy Petrels scored a single run in each inning from the 4th-8th innings, taking the lead in the seventh. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--HUNTER CAIN was the lone Lion with a multi-hit game going 2-for-5 with an RBI. 
--JAKE GARNER earned the start for Piedmont tossing four innings allowing two hits while striking out four. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Piedmont used three pitchers in the contest conceding just three earned runs in the game.
