Lions Open Conference Play With 6-3 Loss to Brevard

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Brevard 6, Piedmont 3
Records: Piedmont, 8-10-1, 0-1 USA South; Brevard 14-7, 3-1 USA South

DEMOREST, Ga. - In the 2022 USA South conference opener for Piedmont baseball, the Lions fell 6-3 to Brevard on an error-filled defensive outing. Piedmont tallied five errors in the contest allowing for four unearned runs for the Tornados.

After holding the Tornados scoreless through the first two innings, the third inning saw Brevard tack on three runs on two hits and a pair of errors. A leadoff error in the inning led to a bases loaded, no out opportunity where Brevard began to trade runs for outs.

PEYTON IRVIN allowed just one earned run in that inning after a pair of errors, but a solo homerun to left in the fifth inning by Jason Jucker made it 4-0. Piedmont was not out of the contest as they capitalized on Brevard errors in the sixth inning to plate a pair of runs making it 4-2.

Piedmont continued to keep the contest within reach but in the eighth inning, Irvin was pulled after a pair of hits and TYLER ROON entered. A walk and an error didn't help the cause as the Tornados were able to add two insurance runs to extend the lead to 6-2.

That was the score entering the final half inning, but Piedmont was able to muster some magic, though not enough for the comeback. NOAH AARON doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a hard hit single by CARTER BALLSTADT

Up next, the Lions host Brevard for game two of the series Saturday at 3 p.m. It will also be Alumni Day at Loudermilk Field with special events for the Piedmont faithful.

TURNING POINT:
--Brevard scored three runs in the third inning but it was a solo shot in the fifth that proved to be the game winner for the Tornados.
