Piedmont Baseball Swept in Sunday Doubleheader v. Emory

Game 2 Score: Emory 14, Piedmont 5

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont baseball team was unable to contain the Emory offense as the Eagles swept a Sunday doubleheader on a chilly afternoon at Loudermilk Field.

The Eagles used multiple big innings to run away from the Lions in both contests, despite the Piedmont offensive attack showing fight with 11 total runs over the two games.

Game 1: Emory 11, Piedmont 6

The Eagles used a pair of big innings to sink the Lions in game one, scoring four runs in the second and adding five more in the sixth to break the game open.

After both teams stranded a runner in the first, Emory's Henry Pelinski launched the first pitch of the second inning out of the park to right center field to put the Eagles on the board. Emory followed by scoring three more runs on an error, sacrifice fly and passed ball to take a 4-0 lead.

Piedmont was able to claw back into the game in the middle innings, scoring single runs in the third and fifth as Irvin settled in on the mound.

However, the Eagles removed all doubt from the outcome with their five-run sixth, chasing Irvin from the contest.

While Emory added to its lead with runs in the eighth and ninth against the Piedmont bullpen, the Lions did not go quietly in the bottom of the ninth, tacking on three runs to make it an 11-6 final score.

Emory starting pitcher Jack Moore earned the win to improve to 5-0, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing five hits and three runs while striking out seven.

COLE ELLIS (2-3), NOAH AARON (2-2) and SCOTT LYON (2-2) each picked up multi-hit games with Lyon scoring three of Piedmont's six runs for the contest.

Game 2: Emory 14, Piedmont 5

The Emory bats remained hot in game two, scoring five runs over the first three innings and never trailing in the game. The Lions rallied back with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before the Eagles turned the game in their favor thanks to a four-run seventh inning.

Piedmont starter BRADEN SIMMS had his strikeout stuff working, punching out six over 3.0 innings.

After falling behind 1-0, HUNTER CAIN drove home a run to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

Trailing by two going into the fourth, JACKSON RANDOLPH singled home a pair of runs to cut the Piedmont deficit to 5-3 before ALEX GONZALEZ roped a two-run double down the left field line to tie the score at 5-all in the fifth.

Unfortunately, from there, it was all Eagles, who took advantage of a Piedmont error in the seventh and scored four times off HARRISON TRAWICK, who had thrown outstanding relief before that point.

Up next, the Lions will take to the road this Tuesday, March 15 for a 6 p.m. matchup at Oglethorpe.

- Trailing just 4-2, the Eagles struck for five runs in the sixth inning of game one to take control.
