Lady Lions Drop 12-7 Game v. Averett in Brutal Cold

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Averett 12, Piedmont 7
Records: Averett 3-1, 1-0 USA South; Piedmont, 3-4, 0-1 USA South

DEMOREST, Ga. - In a contest that was as much a battle against the elements, the Piedmont women's lacrosse team fell 12-7 to Averett in the USA South opener Saturday. Temperatures were in the low 30's throughout with winds gusting above 20-30 mph and snow flurries off and on through the contest.

Piedmont saw a strong start in the contest scoring four in the opening quarter of action to lead 4-3 after one. MERRYN BUMPASS scored twice in the opening period while LINDLEY WARD and MACHAELA SMITH added a goal each.

As time wore on, the weather seemed to catch up with the Lady Lions as the hot start was tempered with Piedmont scoring just one goal in each of the final three quarters.

Averett tied the contest early in the second period making it 4-4 and that was part of a five goal run for the Cougars to take the lead. The Cougars led 7-5 at the break after REBECCA SLADE scored for Piedmont recording her first goal of the season.

The Cougars outscored Piedmont 3-1 in the third and 2-1 in the fourth. KELLIANNE SCHLOSSER recorded 21 saves in the contest allowing 11 goals. RACHEL VERNER saw under four minutes of action allowing a goal and recording a save.

Up next, the Lady Lions will travel to Southern Virginia next Saturday, March 19.

 TURNING POINT:
--Averett scored five unanswered in the first and second period to claim the lead and never trailed in the second half.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Bumpass and Ward both added two goals in the contest.
