ORLANDO, Fla. - The Piedmont men's tennis team polished off a perfect 3-0 day and a 5-0 Orlando trip with a 6-3 win on Tuesday night over Saint Mary's.
The win is the team's fifth in a row over the past three days.
Battling fatigue in their third match of a marathon Tuesday, the Lions powered through doubles, with a clutch win in a hard-fought match at No. 2 from
COOPER KEWORK and
RYAN RAUGH flipping momentum.
Piedmont fell at No. 1 doubles, but
BRYCE VANORDER and
KODY DILLS, playing together for the first time, prevailed 8-4 at No. 3, setting the stage for the big 8-6 win from Kework and Raugh to give the Lions a 2-1 edge heading into singles.
In singles action, three matches were decided rather quickly while the other three were fought until the end.
CHRIS BALE capped his outstanding day with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 to improve to 4-0 in singles play this season with wins from four different spots in the lineup.
Fresh off being named USA South Rookie of the Week, Raugh rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3. However, it was Porcelli who delivered the most dramatic moment of the match, clinching the perfect day for the Lions by rallying from losing the first set, 6-0, to take the second, 6-1, and then win the third-set superbreaker 10-8 to ensure the win for the Lions.
Playing No. 3,
HOUSTON MEDLOCK rallied back from losing a second-set tiebreaker to win the third-set match breaker 10-8 as well, putting a sixth point on the board for the Lions.
The Cardinals were able to take the No. 5 and No. 6 singles lines, although
JC FOSTER made it tough on his opponent, taking him to breakers in both sets at No. 5.
Up next, the Lions will return home and host Pfeiffer this Saturday at 1 p.m.
