DEMOREST, Ga. - In a doubleheader Monday, the Piedmont University baseball team swept both contests over Elizabethtown to claim the series. Piedmont won in convincing 11-1 fashion in game one and held on thanks to CARTER BALLSTADT on the hill in the second game 8-7.

In game one, it was a pitcher's duel early before the Lions' offense exploded. Piedmont totaled 11 runs on 12 hits scoring in each inning beginning in the third.

CARTER BALLSTADT got the Lions on the board first with a double to drive in TYLER NELSON. Doubles were contagious in the contest with CONNER JELLEY doubling in the fourth to drive in a pair and increase the lead.

KYLE CARLSON was electric going 4-for-4 with three doubles in the first contest with two RBI and two runs scored.

BRADEN SIMMS earned the start going 5.0 innings allowing just six hits, striking out five and picked up his second victory of the season. TYLER ROON continued his impressive start to the year pitching three innings of scoreless work allowing just two hits.

In game two, the Lions were playing from behind after a three run first for the Blue Jays, but that was immediately undone with a four run first for Piedmont. After a 37 minute first inning, the Lions led 4-3 thanks to four hits including three doubles and a double steal by Ballstadt and HUNTER CAIN.

Ballstadt stole second getting the Blue Jays in a pickle as they attempted to throw out Jelley at home resulting in a double steal plating the fifth run of the game.

The Lions scored in every inning until the bottom of the fifth when the Blue Jays became a threat again. In the top of the fifth, Elizabethtown added a pair of runs to make it 7-5 and went back to work riding momentum in the sixth plating another run making it a one-run game.

Piedmont scored in the seventh as JAMES WHITMER pinch hit recording a sac fly to score JACK GILSENAN. In the eighth inning, CARTER BALLSTADT entered to pitch recording four strikeouts in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

The Blue Jays scored one in the top of the ninth and had two in scoring position with no outs before Ballstadt recorded two more strikeouts and a pop up to end the rally.

Up next, Piedmont hosts Adrian Wednesday afternoon at Loudermilk Field at 4 p.m.
