Women's Lacrosse Drops Contest at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team fell 16-4 at Sewanee on Saturday afternoon.
The game marks the end of a three-game road trip, all against Southern Athletic Association foes to start the season.
Sewanee erased all doubt in the early going, scoring 11 straight goals to start the game and holding the Lady Lions scoreless until the late stages of the first half.
Freshman MERRYN BUMPASS led Piedmont, as she recorded her first career hat trick while adding an assist. Junior LINDLEY WARD scored the only other Piedmont goal and assisted on one of Bumpass' three for the day.
The Tigers opened the scoring a minute and a half in and then proceeded to score three more times to jump ahead 4-0 before the 10:00 mark in the first quarter.
The Lady Lions were unable to stop the run, surrendering 11 goals in the first quarter and going down 12-0 before Bumpass scored her first of the game, with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.
Ward added her first goal on the heels of the one from Bumpass, making it a 2-0 run for the Lady Lions going to the break.
Unfortunately, the Tigers reestablished control, scoring four of the next five goals in the second half to jump back ahead 16-3.
Up next, the Lady Lions will host Warren Wilson in their home opener this Tuesday, March 1 at 4 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
The Tigers blitzed the Lions in the early going, scoring 12 straight goals to start the contest.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
Bumpass delivered her first career hat trick while also adding an assist.
Freshmen MAGGI SPRATLIN and MALLORY O'BRIEN tied for the team lead with three caused turnovers each.
Sewanee's Hattie Fogarty led all players with four goals on the afternoon.
