DEMOREST, Ga. - The No. 4 Piedmont Lions delivered a thrilling 3-1 win over No. 5 Berea in the CCS Quarterfinals matchup Wednesday. A pair of second half goals helped lead the Lions to victory after the two teams were knotted up with less than 15 minutes remaining.
The Lions saw ample opportunities in the first half of the contest but struggled to cap them off. Finally, in the 35th minute, junior midfielder
RICARDO RUIZ headed home a beautiful corner opportunity served in by freshman midfielder
MOHAMMED ALSUWEYDI.
However, Piedmont closed the half with 18 total shots but had just a 1-0 lead to show for it.
Things continued to tighten up in the contest when the Mountaineers found the back of the net in the 63rd minute. Jean Paul Nunez dropped a beautiful long ball to Levi Loveless who leveled the contest.
In the 77th minute,
COLIN VOGEL left his mark on the contest by adding his fifth goal of the year. Freshman forward
JONATHAN FERDINAND played a brilliant ball into the box where Vogel settled and finished the opportunity in the bottom left corner.
Ferdinand continued to be an impact sub just minutes later as he would head home a corner from sophomore midfielder
JASON AUSSIN to make the contest 3-1. This was Ferdinand's first goal of his career coming in the 81st minute.
The Lions would hold off Berea for the remaining time and exit the Walker Athletic Complex with the first playoff win in CCS history for the club.
Up next, No. 4 Piedmont will travel to No. 1 seed LaGrange College for a CCS Semifinals matchup. The contest is set for Saturday, Oct. 29 with the time for kickoff TBA.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
