Volleyball Celebrates Senior Class, Claims Win Over LaGrange in CCS Tri-Match

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University volleyball team honored four seniors prior to the final match of the season inside Cave Arena and earned a split in their final home CCS tri-match of the season. After a 3-1 loss to Covenant, the Lady Lions bounced back to claim a straight sets 3-0 win over LaGrange. 

Match 1: Covenant 3, Piedmont 1

Against Covenant, Piedmont looked to be in danger of being swept after falling 25-11, 25-17 in the first two sets. The Lady Lions were not going to surrender quietly however as they clawed back to take the third set 25-22.

In the third, Piedmont trailed 10-6 and the Scots looked to be riding momentum to a sweep. The Lady Lions claimed the lead at 17-16 and built the lead to 22-17 including forcing a Scots' timeout. 

Covenant battled back but the Lady Lions closed it out with a kill by JIA WEATHERSBY to finalize the 25-22 win. 

In the fourth, the Scots led 19-15, but Piedmont continued to work down to the wire. Covenant led 23-19, but the Lady Lions clawed back to trail 24-22 before falling 25-22 to end the run. 

BROOKLYN GUNN led Piedmont with 14 assists and posted nine digs while JENNIFER HERRERA was second on the team in assists with nine. 

Match 2: Piedmont 3, LaGrange 0

Against LaGrange, Piedmont raced out to a clear lead claiming the opening set 25-12. The Lady Lions held LaGrange to a negative attack percentage in the first set with just five kills. 

Piedmont trailed 15-14 in the second set before reeling off a 9-0 run to lead 23-15. LaGrange tacked on a few points late but Piedmont advanced to a 2-0 lead with a 25-16 win. 

The third set was tight throughout, but the Panthers again held a lead midway through at 12-8. LaGrange led by two 22-20 but it was a battle to the finish. The Panthers led 23-21 but extra points were needed as the two were going point-for-point down the stretch. 

The Lady Lions finally sealed the win 29-27 with a kill by JESSICA SCONYERS and an attack error from the Panthers. 

Piedmont totaled 43 kills to the Panthers' 24 as Piedmont had 18 kills in the third set alone. 

Up next, the Lady Lions face Wesleyan on the road Monday in a makeup contest from earlier this season. 

TURNING POINT:
--Covenant was able to put it away late in the fourth set, earning match point at 24-20 though the Lady Lions continued to battle to 25-22.
--It took extras in the match against LaGrange to seal the win as Piedmont battled to claim the third set 29-27.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--CIERA PHELPS led Piedmont with eight kills against Covenant, a season-high for the senior. 
--HANNAH KATE CHADWELL tied a season-high with 11 kills against LaGrange.
