Volleyball Drops Two Against Washington & Lee, Roanoke

DANVILLE, Va. – On day two of tournament action in Virginia, the Piedmont University volleyball team was unable to secure a victory dropping a pair of matches to Washington & Lee and Roanoke College. 

Match 1: Piedmont 0, Washington & Lee 3

The Lady Lions faced the reigning ODAC Champions from the spring in the first match of the day as the Washington & Lee Generals took the match 3-0. W&L went a perfect 16-0 in the spring losing a total of just six sets in those matches. 

The Generals took the match 25-14, 25-15 and 25-10. The Generals had a pair of athletes with double digit kills as Val Sokolow and Carson Allsteadt both tallied 12 kills. The Generals had a total attack percentage of .333 to Piedmont's .011.

BRI KING led the way for the Lady Lions with eight kills. JENNIFER HERRERA posted 10 of Piedmont's 20 assists and JESSICA BEIL also reached double digits with 10 digs. 

Match 2: Piedmont 0, Roanoke 3

Piedmont dropped the second match of the day as well, but it was a much closer contest against Roanoke. The Lady Lions fell 25-22, 25-18, 25-19. 

In the first set, Piedmont used a quick run to take a 16-13 lead capitalizing on attack errors by Roanoke. It was a tight battle down the stretch with the two tied at 22, but it was Roanoke who was able to finish off the set for the victory. 

It was a back-and-forth battle in the second set with the two going point-for-point for a stretch before the Maroons reeled off a late run at the end outscoring Piedmont 6-2 in the final points. The third set saw Roanoke make a 9-2 run that distanced them in order to seal the match. 

JENNA ASH had an impressive performance with four blocks to lead Piedmont. JENNIFER HERRERA and BROOKLYN GUNN both had double digit assists with 13 and 10, respectively. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Washington and Lee capitalized on Piedmont errors to secure the first match. 
--Piedmont totaled 28 kills in the match against Roanoke. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--JENNIFER HERRERA accounted for half of Piedmont's assists in the opening match of the day with 10 against W&L.
--JENNA ASH led Piedmont with four blocks against Roanoke and also added 14 digs. 

UP NEXT:
--Piedmont returns to tournament action next weekend in Atlanta at the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrel Classic.
