ATLANTA, Ga. – In tournament action in Atlanta, the Piedmont University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches 3-0 to Millsaps and Averett Friday. The Lady Lions have one more contest over the weekend against host Oglethorpe on Saturday.
Match 1: Piedmont 0, Millsaps 3
The Lady Lions faced the Majors of Millsaps to open the tournament Friday morning with a 3-0 loss. The Majors won 25-13, 25-18, 25-15.
Millsaps jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first set to take control and used a 7-0 run midway through the second to distance themselves from the Lions to lead 18-10 in the second set. The Lady Lions threatened in the second set taking three of the final four points but it was not enough in a 25-18 set loss.
The third set saw Piedmont jump out with a 9-7 lead only to have the Majors reel off another run of their own 6-0 to claim the lead for good. JENNA ASH was the only Lady Lions in double digits for kills with 10 while JENNIFER HERRERA and VANESSA MANZO split the majority of assists with nine and eight, respectively.
Manzo also posted 10 digs while JESSICA BEIL led the team with 13.
Match 2: Piedmont 0, Averett 3
Piedmont dropped the second match by the same score of 3-0 as Averett took the match 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.
The Lady Lions had their highest total of kills in a three set match this season and posted a .174 attack percentage. It was a back-and-forth battle in the early going of the first set against the Cougars, but Averett began to chip away. The second set was all Cougars as they took an 18-8 advantage and in the third, the Lady Lions battled back from being down 20-11, but fell 25-18.
HANNAH KATE CHADWELL and JESSICA SCONYERS both added seven kills in the match. MARY-GRACE SHAW had nine digs to lead Piedmont while JENNA ASH added seven.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--Millsaps used 10 aces to set the pace against the Lady Lions in the opening match of the day.
--Piedmont posted its best attack percentage of the season against Averett hitting .174.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

JENNA ASH was the top performer for the Lions against Millsaps totaling 10 of Piedmont's 21 kills.

JENNIFER HERRERA totaled 14 assists against Averett to lead the team.

--The Lady Lions will return to Atlanta tomorrow to face Oglethorpe at 5 p.m. Saturday.
