Lions Outduel Panthers For Much-Needed 3-1 Win

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 3, Birmingham-Southern 1
Records: Piedmont, 3-6; Birmingham-Southern, 5-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of timely goals and another hat trick from senior forward CAMERON EARLS propelled Piedmont University's men's soccer team to a 3-1 defeat of the Birmingham-Southern Panthers on Tuesday night, ending a five-game skid for the Lions.

Tuesday's performance marks the fifth career hat trick for Earls and gives him nine goals on the season, which ranked him first in the USA South at the time of the game's conclusion.

Losers of five straight contests coming in, the Lions decided enough was enough and played as aggressive as they have all season, firing off 13 shots – 11 of which were on goal – and giving themselves plenty of scoring chances.

One such chance came in the early on in the 10th minute when a BSC foul gave Earls a penalty kick opportunity. The senior fired his toward the post, but it was Panther keeper Leo Reyes who came up with a diving save to preserve the 0-0 gridlock.

Earls was 5-5 on penalty kicks for his career before that moment, but he wouldn't be denied again as he notched his first goal of the night in the waning minutes of the first half on a pass from JUSTIN DEAS that came into the box from the right.

That momentum for Piedmont led to another goal just two minutes later as senior LULE TEKILEMARIAM placed his left-to-right pass perfectly for Earls to head in past Reyes, giving the Lions a 2-0 halftime advantage in the final minute of play.

Piedmont added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as Earls completed his hat trick with another header, this time off the pass from sophomore EVAN SAYLOR. Saylor led the team with six assists a season ago and notched his first of this season with his helpful pass on Tuesday.

The Panthers didn't go quietly and finally got on the board with a Pranay Fadnis goal in the 80th minute, but it wasn't enough to undo the effort put forth by the Lions.

Despite the one goal allowed, Piedmont's freshman keeper CJ WYBORN racked up another eight saves to add to his season total of 35.

Inside the Box Score:
-Piedmont put up double-digit shots for the third game in a row, but reached double figure shots on goal (11) for the first time all season.
-BSC outshot Piedmont by 17 with a whomping 30 attempts and earned nine corner kick chances to Piedmont's three in a losing effort.
