Records: Maryville, 8-1 (1-0); Piedmont, 2-6 (0-1)

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Piedmont University's men's soccer team got USA South conference play started on Saturday afternoon, but fell 3-0 on the road at Maryville College for the team's fifth consecutive loss.

The Lions have now dropped each of their last two conference openers dating back to a 1-0 opening day loss at Brevard a season ago. On the current five-game skid, this is just one of two games that were decided by more than one goal.

Maryville jumped on the Lions early in this contest and fired off 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, three of which found the net for each of the Scots' goals.

Jameson Elmore got the Scots started in the 19th minute as the team's fourth shot of the match found its way to the left side of the net and past Piedmont keeper CJ WYBORN.

Maryville got a break in the 27th minute and capitalized on a Piedmont mistake as Austin Vinyard connected on a penalty kick goal for his fifth score of the season. The penalty opportunity was set up from a handball called against the Lions.

The Scots put the finishing touches on the game in the 33rd minute as Brooklyn Muccillo also went bottom left for his second goal of the season, which put Maryville ahead 3-0.

With the lead firmly in hand, the Scots packed down on defense and only registered three shot attempts in the second half.

The Lions came out of the break with a plan and came close to executing as the team put four shots on goal in the first six minutes of the half. JUSTIN DEAS, MALA JALLOW, and JASON AUSSIN (2) each had looks at the goal, but Maryville's keeper Mykal Manfred managed to save each one and preserve the lead his teammates on offense had built up.

Maryville improved to 8-1 with the win and increased its current winning streak to seven games.

Inside the Box Score:
-Piedmont put up eight shots in the second perioid with half of them being on goal, which showed some resilience in the squad when facing a big deficit.
-The Lions earned seven corner kicks to Maryville's four while both teams were whistled for just one yellow card each.

Up Next:
-The Lions are on the road again this Tuesday, September 28, when they face off with Birmingham-Southern at 6:00 p.m. ET.
