MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Piedmont University's men's soccer team rallied to force overtime with a pair of second-half goals on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to fend off the winning effort from the Pfeiffer Falcons.
After forcing overtime, the Lions looked to be headed for a draw, but a long-distance strike from Pfeiffer's Jason Juarez Leyva in the 110
th minute found the top right corner to give the Falcons a last-minute victory.
Piedmont has now lost three consecutive games, with two of those losses coming in double-overtime contests.
Pfeiffer jumped out to an early lead with a pair of goals midway through the first half as Cristyan Cabrera scored in the 22
nd minute before Caleb Livengood found the net in the 29
th minute.
The Falcons took advantage of the limited scoring chances in the first half as they cashed in on two of their five shots while Piedmont came away empty on its three attempts.
Pfeiffer's aggression ramped up in the second half as the Falcons fired off 11 shots, but to no avail against Lions' keeper
LANDON KETCHIE. The junior made six saves in his first career start, four of which came in the second half of play.
With the defense holding serve, the Lions offensive front managed to get back in the game, starting with sophomore
EVAN SAYLOR's goal in the 51
st minute.
Sophomore
MATTHEW FRANKLIN got the assist on Saylor's goal, then scored a goal of his own in the 73
rd minute to equalize the game at 2-2. Saylor and Franklin are the first two Lions not named
CAMERON EARLS to score goals in 2021.
For a long while, it looked as though Franklin's goal would earn the Lions a draw after a rough start to the game, but the Juarez Leyva strike sunk those hopes in the final minute.
