Lions Fall 1-0 to Southern Virginia in 2OT

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Southern Virginia 1, Piedmont 0
Records: Southern Virginia, 1-3; Piedmont, 2-2

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Piedmont University's men's soccer team battled hard on Saturday evening but couldn't hold off Southern Virginia as the Knights earned a 1-0 win in double overtime in a neutral site tilt.

SVU's Shawn Curtis scored unassisted in the 107th minute after intercepting a pass and putting one past Piedmont keeper CJ WYBORN for the game's only goal. The goal gave SVU its first victory of the season after starting the year at 0-3.

Saturday's loss also marks the first overtime loss for the Lions since October 9, 2019, when the Lions fell 4-3 at Maryville. Ironically, that game took place on the same field as Saturday's contest.

The game was as even as even can be for the most part as Piedmont outshot Southern Virginia by just two shots at 16-14 overall. In the first half, Piedmont held a 6-4 advantage in shots, with three of those attempts being on goal.

Piedmont's best scoring chance came late in the first overtime period when a shot from sophomore OWEN GATES hit the crossbar. That turned out to be Piedmont's final shot attempt of the evening before SVU's lone shot of the second overtime period resulted in the game-winning score.

Of the Lions' six shots on goal, two of them came from each Gates, LULE TEKILEMARIAM, and MATTHEW LOFTIN. Senior forward CAMERON EARLS fired off three shots and remains the only Lion to score a goal so far this fall season.

Inside the Box Score:
- Piedmont outshot SVU by a slim 16-14 margin and evened the Knights with seven corner kicks for each side.
- Just one yellow card was issued to the Lions on Saturday – which went to JAMES CASH – after the team had earned 10 yellow cards in the first three games.

Up Next:
- Piedmont returns to the Walker Athletic Complex on Sunday, September 12, for ta non-conference matchup with LaGrange College at 2:00 p.m.
