DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team led wire-to-wire and held off a furious late rally from Pfeiffer to win, 10-8, on a rainy Thursday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.
For the second consecutive contest, senior attacker
EMMA FRANSEN led the way for the Lady Lions, scoring seven of the team's 10 goals. Her seven goals scored tied a career high for the Cypress, Texas native.
Piedmont jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back, building a lead of 10-4 late in the second half before the Falcons scored the final four goals of the contest but came up just short.
In support of Fransen, junior
AISLYNN KIMBRO added a pair of goals to go with three caused turnovers.
It was Kimbro who started the scoring, putting Piedmont on the board with 24:11 left in the first half. Fransen then added a pair of free position goals to make the score 3-0 as the Lady Lions' defense stifled Pfeiffer's attack. The Falcons finally broke through, making the score 3-1 with 16:27 remaining in the first half.
However, the Lady Lions quickly regained momentum adding three goals over the next 10 minutes to build a 6-1 edge.
Holding a 6-2 lead at the break, the Falcons scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to cut their deficit to 6-4 but Piedmont responded again, this time with a 4-0 run to build a 10-4 lead with 5:03 still to play. Three of Piedmont's four goals scored in the run were by Fransen.
Although Pfeiffer was able to give the Lady Lions a scare with a 4-0 run to end the contest, it was never able to make it over the top as Piedmont held the Falcons scoreless over the final 3:04.
