Volleyball Opens 2021 Spring Season with Sweep of Wesleyan

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College volleyball team opened the spring 2021 season Tuesday inside Cave Arena with a sweep of Wesleyan including a win in the USA South conference opener. 

Match 1: Piedmont 3, Wesleyan 0

The Lady Lions took control early in the first match with a 9-3 lead in the first set as BRIANNA KING came out strong with four kills before the first called timeout. Piedmont forced another timeout in the first set as JENNIFER HERRERA led Piedmont to seven straight points while serving, giving the Lady Lions a 14-3 lead. 

Piedmont ran away with the first set 25-9, but the Wolves challenged more in the second set. Piedmont was up 11-7 early and held off Wesleyan's best attempts in a 25-18 second set. The Lady Lions would take the third by a similar score 25-16 to claim the USA South opener. 

BRIANNA KING was impressive with 12 total kills in the first match while JESSICA BEIL added 19 digs. BROOKLYN GUNN and JENNIFER HERRERA split time as the primary setter with Gunn earning 17 assists while Herrera added 11.

Match 2: Piedmont 3, Wesleyan 0

Piedmont once again made quick work in the first set with a 25-12 decision after coasting to a 15-3 lead. The Lady Lions forced the Wolves into another timeout midway through the second set as TAYLOR BROWN was serving and had the Lady Lions on a hot streak and pulling away 16-10. 

After a 25-18 win in the second set, AUBREE YANCEY and ALINA ROBERTS both tallied four kills and MARY-GRACE SHAW had eight digs to that point. It was a true team effort all around as stats were split fairly evenly across the boxscore. The Lady Lions took the third set 25-16 closing out the match for win number two on the year. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
--BROOKLYN GUNN had 17 assists and four aces in her first match as a Lady Lion.
--HANNAH KATE CHADWELL tallied eight kills in the second match while Yancey added seven. 

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--BRIANNA KING started the season strong with 15 kills in the set of matches.
