Men’s Soccer Falls 3-2 at LaGrange to Finish Regular Season

LAGRANGE, Ga. – Piedmont College's men's soccer team's road struggles continued on Friday night as the Lions fell 3-2 to the LaGrange College Panthers to finish out the 2020-21 regular season.

The Lions finished the regular season at 6-5 overall with five of their six wins coming at home. On the road, the young Piedmont squad was just 1-5 with an average of 0.83 goals per game away from the Walker Athletic Complex.

Piedmont's two goals in the regular season finale were the most the Lions had scored away from home all season long, but it wasn't enough in a game in which the Lions were outperformed on the offensive end.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half despite LaGrange holding a 19-4 advantage in overall shots during the first 45 minutes. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, LaGrange's Enrique Hernandez netted an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to break the deadlock.

Just eight minutes later, Hernandez scored his second of the game on a pass from Jaydon Parrish to put the Panthers up 2-0.

Piedmont's senior goal-scoring leader CAMERON EARLS responded with a goal of his own in the 68th minute to keep the Lions in the game at a 2-1 deficit, but again it was Hernandez who put the Lions in a hole as his third goal of the game in the 79th minute put the Panthers up 3-1 with just about 10 minutes left.

Not to be outdone without a fight, Earls scored a minute later on a penalty kick goal, which ironically resulted in a red card for Hernandez, to again keep Piedmont in striking distance. Despite their best efforts, the Lions never found the net again as their best scoring chance game in the 90th minute when a shot from EVAN SAYLOR was saved by LaGrange goalkeeper Lucas Wright to preserve the Panthers' 3-2 win.

Even in a losing effort the Lions fought until the end as senior goalkeeper CAMERON VERONA made a spectacular 16 saves to give the Lions a fighting chance. Verona's 16 saves rank in a tie for third for the most saves ever made in a single game during Piedmont's NCAA program history.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont kept the game close despite being outshot 36-14 and earning just one corner kick to LaGrange's nine.
- The Lions clocked just five shots on goal in the game and connected on two of them while the Panthers scored only three times on 19 shots on goal.

UP NEXT:
- Piedmont will now await their seed for the upcoming USA South west division conference tournament, which is set to begin with the semifinal round next Saturday, April 3.
